Login stealers are a form of a web malware that are used to silently capture user login data on an infected website.

wp-login.php injection

wp-login.php is the natural choice for someone that is trying to steal the username and password included in POST requests sent to the website.

Why?

Because the file wp-login.php receives the POST requests containing the username (log) and password (pwd) data when the victim clicks Log In.

Packets captured on the web server itself so we are able to see both requests

PHP Exfiltration

Since PHP runs on the hosting server - the malware can exfiltrate direct from the hosting server back to the attacker’s own website, so nothing will show up in website scanners like Sucuri SiteCheck or in the victim’s requests to the server (e.g dev tools network tab). Everything looks normal on their (client) end.

We can see the capture and exfiltration code using mainly curl to send out the request in the following PHP code excerpt:

Even if the exfiltrate URL file doesn’t exist - the attacker can still get all the exfiltrated information just by viewing their server’s access log.

This would also apply if it resulted in a 403 response instead of a 404 or standard 200.

Majority of shared web hosts are not going to be dropping or preventing these requests from going out - so even though it is simple it just works for the average WordPress website web host.
